Salem Cemetery was named for the Salem United Brethren Church which was across the road from 1873 to 1963. The first burial was in 1848 and was Catherine Bates.
Salem Cemetery was the first cemetery in Howard Township. It was laid out by Bernhart Learner in 1848. It is now cared for by the Howard Township Trustee.

Because of the age of the stones, many are very difficult to read. I found it disappointing that there are at least 6 veterans interred here, that lie in unmarked graves.
