18. John BEHELER
According to "Franklin County (VA) History 1786 - 1986" by John S. and Emily
J.
Salmon 1993 p. 116: "Although many peddlers were from other states, some were from nearby counties. One was Jonathan Cundiff, of Bedford County, who lived near Staunton River. Cundiff was a gunsmith who farmed, kept bees, made flaxseed oil, owned property on Blackwater River in Franklin County that he leased to Isham Cundiff, and manufactured gunpowder in his powder mill. He not only made rifles and shotguns but repaired them and made parts that he sold to other gunsmiths. He also kept a diary between 1820 and 1824, in which he mentioned riding to the Franklin County courthouse on court days to sell gunpowder and trade with such local gunsmiths as John Beheler. When Cundiff traveled to and from the courthouse he stayed with several friends or
business acquaintances, including William Smith, Peter Holland, John Meador Holland, Michael Johnson, Peter Booth, George Beheler, and Thomas Hill.
On page 123 - "John Beheler, a local gunsmith who was working in the county as early as 1820, was still active in 1850. Although he was not recorded as a gunsmith in 1860, Beheler no doubt kept working; when he died in 1881 he still owned a workbench and 'Riflings rods'." (The book shows a photograph of a rifle made by John Beheler ca. 1840, with bullet mold, powder horn, pouch, and worm. It is owned by Dr. J. Francis Amos of Rocky Mount, VA.)1820 census, Franklin Co., VA
