Two men, one from Greentown and the other from Kokomo, were killed in a head-on collision of two autos on Ind. 22 about one and one-half miles east of Kokomo Sunday night.
Victims of the crash were Paul Roy Frakes, 22, Greentown, and Donald S. Beheler, 39, 1005 E. Superior St.
Their deaths marked the second and third traffic fatalities in Howard County this year. The first came on Feb. 28, when an Indianapolis man was killed in a car-truck collision on U.S. 31, north of Kokomo.
Howard County Coroner John Peacock and Deputy Coroner Robert Fields said Beheler suffered a skull fracture, broken nose, and crushed chest.
They reported that Frakes suffered a broken neck, broken bones in both legs; broken ribs and deep cuts on the face and scalp.
Investigating officers reported that Beheler was dead when help arrived at the scene. Frakes, according to the report, was dead on arrival at the St. Joseph Hospital, wher he was taken by city emergency ambulance.
According to State Trooper J. Rex Dillman, the car driven by Beheler was traveling east on Ind. 22 when it attempted to pass another eastbound auto, driven by Omar Rude, 34, Kokomo R.R. 3.
The trooper said the auto which Beheler was driving struck the rear of the Rude car and then swerved into the north lane of traffic where it collided with a westbound car driven by Frakes.
The Rude auto went off the pavement on the southside of the highway and Rude's wife, Nelda, 31, was thrown from the car onto the soft berm. She suffered bruises but was not hospitalized. Rude was not injured.
Dillman said Beheler was driving a 1957 Chevrolet which was registered to Charles L. Boles, 1312 N. Courtland Ave. Boles said he had loaned the car to Beheler.
Both Frakes' car and Boles' auto were demolished. Heavy damage was listed to the Rude auto.
Frakes and Beheler were alone at the time of the accident-about 6:50 p.m., Sunday-authorities reported.
The point of the collision was about one mile east of Darrough Chapel. Beheler was tentatively identified by a dog tag found in his pocket. Positive identification was later made by relatives.
Assisting in the investigation were State Trooper Millard Huffman, Sheriff Tom Leap and Deputy Sheriff Pete Dieterly.
Frakes was born at Marion, May 13, 1936, the son of James R. and Cora (Vardeman) Frakes. The mother survives.
Last Friday, he purchased and opened the County Line Restaurant on U.S. 31 north of Kokomo. Services will be conducted Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Pilgrim Holiness Church, of which he was a member, with burial in Greentown Cemetery. Friends may call at the residence after 4 p.m. Tuesday.
